Here at Henley Beach Primary School, we strive to involve our school community in the learning journey of our students. As the parent / guardian of a primary school student, we like to think that you would want to know all you can about how your child learns, and also other key factors that impact their journey through primary school. You and your child’s teachers will be the most important influences on their education, and we feel it's necessary to work together to promote learning so your child has the best oppertunity in life.

As educators, we come across a magnitude of information and resources that we think will benefit all those who are exposed. It is here where we hope to offer these resources to you, in order to promote learning amongst all.

GRIT. What Is It & Why Your Child Needs It?

June 2014

"Grit is the tendency to sustain interest in and effort toward very long-term goals."

The idea of "grit" was popularized by University of Pennsylvania psychologist Angela Duckworth (links to her talk and webpage below). She defines "grit" as "perseverance and passion for long-term goals." It involves "working strenuously toward challenges, maintaining effort and interest over years despite failures, adversity, and plateaus in progress." Promote the sense of grit in your child by reminding them that failure is not something to be afriad of, as learning  from challenges (as well as failure) is the key to making the connection for kids that true achievement doesn’t come easily.

Being Powerful Learners In South Australia

June 2014

What Is A Powerful Learner?

A major part of planning for the Powerful Learners of Numeracy and Literacy Summit has been consulting with students about their views on being powerful learners, what key factors help to build the learning power of children and young people and why it is important that we develop powerful learners in our schools and preschools. This paper draws together the views of learners from as far north as Oodnadatta Aboriginal School and as far south as Mount Gambier.
